Senate President John Hainkel created the Senate Select
Committee on the Millennium Port in an effort to move forward with plans
for the development and operation of a new deep water port system in
Louisiana. Senator Hainkel, who serves as the committee's chairman,
authored the 1999 legislation creating the Millennium Port Authority to
lead Louisiana’s effort to develop a new port system to serve the new
giant freighters and containerized cargo that are becoming more prevalent
in the maritime industry, but very little has been done by the authority
so far. The select committee will focus on site selection, comprehensive
fact-finding and policy development efforts related to the port. -
