The
America’s Legislators Back to School Program is a national
bi-partisan civic education effort sponsored by the National
Conference of State Legislatures (NSCL). The program encourages
state legislators to visit students and teachers in the
classroom, bringing civics to life, giving young people an
opportunity to meet personally with their elected state
lawmakers and letting the young citizens know their ideas count.
Students learn about the pressures, conflicts and difficulties
encountered by legislators dealing with public policy problems.
Legislators get a first hand look at what it is like for
students and educators in local schools.
Begun in 1999 as a one week
focus on civic education across the nation, the America’s
Legislators Back to School Program is now a year-long effort
with the annual kick-off event set for the third week in
September.
